Papercrafting With Ali Edwards: ‘One Little Word’ Workshop & Giveaway
Papercrafting inspiration comes in many forms and we’re sharing one we love!
O.K., how many of you are familiar with Ali Edwards?
We are beyond excited to share this annual event with you!
Because I have participated several times and I LOVE it!
The life changes the simple act of choosing a word has brought about for me (and for my business) since I started “following” is truly inspiring.
And, it’s one more chance to do some papercrafting!
More on that shortly.
What’s In It For You?
First, we’re hosting a giveaway – that’s awesome, right?
Second, but more importantly, we’re sharing an amazing source of life and papercrafting inspiration, one you might not have tried: the One Little Word® Workshop.
Now, if you already know all about One Little Word® and just want to get right down to entering, then scroll on down to the section titled “Entering the 2015 One Little Word® Workshop Free Pass Giveaway.”
For those who are new to the concept of One Little Word®, it’s quite simple (as most great things are, right?).
A few snippets from Ali:
“In 2006 I began a tradition of choosing one word for myself each January – a word that I can focus on, meditate on, and reflect upon as I go about my daily life.
What do you do with this one little word? You live with it. You invite it into your life. You let it speak to you. You might even follow where it leads. There are so many possibilities.”
O.K., I know there are likely at least a few of you who are wondering how this is relevant to you, and what’s it got to do with papercrafting, right?
Well, let me share my experience and I promise it’ll be a bit more clear…
Watching From the Sidelines
The first year I participated in One Little Word® (as a lurker), I watched to see which words others chose and then I chose one from that collection.
To be honest, I can’t even recall what my word was that year. And, I didn’t do any OLW-related papercrafting.
But, at the end of that year, I sensed that choosing a word, after really putting energy into the process of both choosing it and “using” it, could be a tool for me to accomplish what I wanted to accomplish moving forward.
Given that I had just been through a really rough time both personally and professionally, that’s saying something!
My Experience as a OLWer
That next year (2013), I signed up and participated in the Workshop – I chose “CREATE” as my word.
Because it spoke to me…on many levels.
I needed to CREATE a new business opportunity.
I longed to have time to CREATE, to be creative. To do more papercrafting!
I wanted to CREATE opportunities to meet new people, both personally and professionally.
I had to CREATE more time for my family and my friends.
And finally, I was looking to CREATE giving-back options for myself and others.
So what happened?
All of it! Yes, all of it!
And some of the most impactful life changes (like my taking over PaperCrafter’s Corner) happened in the first three months of 2013!
So, I bet you can guess what happened when Ali announced the 2014 One Little Word® workshop, right?
Yup, I was immediately in word-search mode!
The day the new workshop was announced, I started dedicating time each night before bed to think about what was challenging me, what I was enjoying and what I wanted to accomplish in 2014.
Why focus on those three areas?
For me, they were what was most important. For you, these focus areas might be different.
And that’s the best part of this whole concept – it’s YOUR word and YOU get to decide what it’s going to be and how you’re going to relate to it.
This past year has been amazing for me personally, and for my business, and I KNOW my 2014 word played a part in that.
What was my word for 2014?
Because I felt that I was being pulled in too many directions. (Unintended consequences of choosing the word CREATE in 2013 and creating too many opportunities? Perhaps. But, no regrets!)
Did I implement FOCUS into may daily life and has it had an impact?
Oh yes! And in a big way! A wonderfully positive way.
I started by placing my word front and center…
I found these awesome, handmade silver letters at one of my favorite little shops here in Austin (yes, choosing a word might mean doing some shopping…just sayin’!) and I placed them on the wall right in front of where I work.
I needed to stay FOCUSed on what was most important for me to be working on in order to achieve my business goals. (Anyone else find it easy to get into reactive mode and not have time to do what you need to be doing, proactively? Yeah, me too.)
I watched each month’s workshop prompt video, downloaded the month’s hand-outs and FOCUSed on my word, taking note of where I was succeeding and making changes where they were warranted. (It’s so much easier to do this during the year than after it’s over and there’s no longer an opportunity to make changes!)
I wrote the word FOCUS on sticky notes, notes that I placed where I knew I needed them most, and removed them only when I knew I had mastered FOCUSing in that area.
Now for me, this year’s word was primarily about my business.
But, it was also very helpful for me in terms of creating and relationships.
I started papercrafting projects that had long been on my “to-do” lists and I’ve celebrated what I HAVE accomplished rather than being so FOCUSed on what I have not. That alone made choosing a word and FOCUSing on it worthwhile!
I also did my best to stay FOCUSed on the people I was with when I was with them, leaving work to be dealt with at other times, whenever possible. (O.K., this is still a work in progress, but we’re FOCUSing on the successes, right?)
Was I “perfect” in all of these areas?
Heck no! But, I FOCUSed on them and I know I did better at all of them in 2014 than I had in the previous year. Yay me! Yay MY Little Word: FOCUS!
