Challenges are HOT right now!
Are you a regular challenge participant? Or, like many, are you sitting back wondering what the heck a challenge IS and how you play along?
This week at PaperCrafter’s Corner, we are talking about challenges. What are they? How do you participate? What are some reasons to participate? What kinds of challenges do you have to choose from? And lucky for us, a few of our fabulous Creative Squad members have selected some challenges to participate in and we’ll be showing you their projects along the way.
Are you ready to get started? First things first …. In the world of paper crafting ….
What is a Challenge?
A challenge is a paper crafter’s invitation to create a project based upon the specific limitations, guidelines or rules established by the challenge host. For example, if I challenge you to create a project featuring my favorite color combination of Aqua, Pink and Dark Gray, that would be considered a “color challenge.” The sky is the limit when it comes to exactly WHAT the specific guidelines of any given challenge might be!
There is certainly NO shortage of paper craft challenge options out there!
- There are many ‘challenge blogs’ specifically dedicated to issuing new challenges each week, bi-monthly or monthly.
- Many of the manufacturers have begun holding challenges as a way to encourage reader and user participation with their brands and to encourage USE of their products!
- Local & online retailers hold regular challenges.
- Print & online magazines hold challenges.
- Many of the popular online forums also hold regular challenges.
Some challenges are held ‘just for fun’ and some feature prizes. Challenge winners are usually determined one of 3 ways:
- At random: By simply participating in the challenge and sharing your project, you are entered into a random drawing.
- By participant vote: All of the blog or messageboard visitors or readers participate in a vote.
- By host judge: One or more people associated with the challenge host will judge or select what the believe to be the best project(s) that fit the challenge parameters.
The prizes can be a variety of things including gift certificates, entire paper collections, a guest designer spot for the month, a blog highlight, huge prize packs or just a virtual high five!
Common Types of Paper Crafts & Scrapbook Challenges Include:
Sketch Challenge: A “sketch” is provided to show guidelines for photo placement, relative dimensions, embellishment placement, background dimensions, background placement and more. Your job then is to create a layout that uses the same number of photos as shown in the sketch and that follows the sketch’s general placement & dimensions. We’ll talk more about sketch challenges tomorrow!
Color Challenge: The challenge host stipulates the entire color palette OR that a certain color that must be included OR that a certain color that must dominate.
Product Challenge: A challenge to use a certain BRAND in your project is common with manufacturers challenges. You also might find that you’re directed to use a specific ITEM on your layout, such as buttons or tags or trim, etc.
Theme Challenge: I love these! The challenge host directs you to create a project about a certain theme or topic, such as friendship, mother’s day, or yourself.
Inspiration Challenge: Your project must be “inspired” by a certain Pinterest photo, item, word, etc.
Technique Challenge: You are challenged to implement a certain technique on your project, such as using mixed media, distressing, layering, coloring, misting, etc.
And more! As well as combinations of the above! Challenges can get really tough when it’s a sketch challenge AND another type of challenge combined into one!
