As many of you already know, I took a Scrappy Tour of Birmingham, AL last month. One of the highlights of that trip was my afternoon spent with the team from Oh My Crafts! If you aren't familiar with Oh My Crafts, they are a well-established and popular online seller of paper crafting supplies. They are a family-owned business based in Utah, and they work hard to reach-out to paper crafters across the country by attending trade shows regularly and by putting on a first rate Oh My Crafts Bus Tour.
What, you ask, is an Oh My Crafts Bus Tour? To tell you the truth, I wasn't sure either! I saw their tour locations & dates on their website but couldn't imagine what it was all about, so I definitely had to go check it out for myself.
Here's the deal: The Oh My Crafts team literally loads up on a huge tour bus (a la rock band style) that sleeps 8, and head's out for 2 weeks at a time to teach paper crafting classes across the country. Can you imagine? Check out the OMC bus…
Apparently it has a full-sized refrigerator and sides that slide out to create Queen sized beds inside. Amazing! And check out those cute vinyl Cricut cuts they put on the side of the bus. I'm pretty sure that Lady Ga Ga doesn't have Cricut cuts on the side of her tour bus 🙂
Like the business itself, the tour is first rate & is a family affair. OMC co-owner Sandy Cottle and her daughter, Amy Cottle, the event planner, teach all of the classes themselves! They bring all of the materials to each city for all attendees to create 3 full projects. And these weren't simple "make & take" type projects. These projects were chosen to showcase brand new techniques, materials, styles and tools.
Here are a couple of the projects I was able to see at the afternoon session….
Believe me, my photography skills do NOT do these projects justice. I wish you could see how gorgeous they were — and the amazing details incorporated into each.
In sitting & talking with Sandy Cottle that afternoon, I learned that she isn't just the co-owner of the store and that her title as "Creative Director" is definitely not an honorary title. She actually LOVES crafting and loves digging into the details of as many of the new products carried by OMC as she possibly can. She tests many of the new products herself, occasionally having the manufacturers make modifications to their product before OMC will carry it! (OMC even carries an exclusive black version of the I-top by Imaginisce. Oh by the way, it's the only i-top that Tim Holtz uses!)
OMC has grown in a relatively short period of time from being an small, e-bay-only seller based out of the family basement to now a team of more than 20 full time employees operating from a brand new facility and more than 23,000 facebook fans!!
They've worked very hard as a family to grow as they have, but some things will never change. Sandy & her daughter Amy say that most family dinner conversations still revolve around the Oh My Crafts business 🙂 And if you're wondering where the name "Oh My Crafts" originated, apparently, Amy's younger brother claims credit for that. Pretty cool claim to fame for the younger sibling, huh?
Oh My Crafts has generously offered to sponsor a PaperCrafter's Corner / Oh My Crafts giveaway! They will be giving away 3 mystery prizes via the OMC Facebook Page. Go check out their page and see what questions they are asking. You will email your answers to the email address that they specify. 3 winners will be selected from all of the correct answers.
