Papercrafting Kits: Make Quick Work of Scrapbooking Your Memories (& WIN?!)
If I asked you what your biggest challenges are around papercrafting, would “lack of time” make the top five?
I know for me it would be my number-one papercrafting challenge (frustration?)!
The busier I get the more easily creating, just for fun and not for a deadline or business, seems to get pushed to the bottom of my priorities.
Why is that?
Why do we often shove the things we most enjoy to the bottom of our priority list, especially when we know that doing things we truly enjoy can provide such a boost to our mood and enjoyment of daily life?
Well, I think it’s time to rethink our creative pursuits – whether they be papercrafting or other hobbies – and make them more of a priority.
Yeah, I know, easier said than done, right?
Well, there is an easier way to get more scrapbooking done.
What’s the secret?
Now, I’ll be the first to admit that, in the past, I might have viewed using a kit as a bit of a cop-out. After all, I’m creative and I can certainly come up with my own layout ideas.
But, who says I have to? And, who has time?!
After all, I can still be creative with other’s ideas, just as I am when I “scraplift” a layout or card or home decor or mixed media or art journal idea. Right?
And, by using a kit another creative soul thought through, I can dedicate my limited time to creating layouts and albums rather than journeying through all the thousands of product options AND having to come up with the layout ideas. Ever feel like the options are overwhelming?
I’ve decided that it’s much more important to actually get scrapbook pages made, gifts completed and mini albums finished.
Who’s with me on this?
Many of you probably know that we have a Kit Club Directory on our site. And, it lists all the kit clubs we know about, with more being added regularly.
But, what you might not know, yet, is that we have a kit club that’s just joined our community as a new sponsor. And, that their kits make quick work – beautiful work – of scrapping all those photos we have locked away on thumb drives, hard drives, Dropbox and other cloud-based back-up services. And, that their creative director has lovingly assembled our favorite product lines into a coordinated collection just waiting for us to add photos, journaling and our own special touches. And, that this creative soul wants to give YOU, one of YOU lucky PCC papercrafters, a chance to try out a kit…for FREE!
Artsy Albums was started by Traci Penrod, a wife and mother who became passionate about scrapbooking after losing her mother to breast cancer at the tender age of 19.
It was that loss that created in her a deep-rooted passion for documenting memories. That led to her scrapbooking, and later to her designing albums, store samples, classes and mini-album kits. And, eventually, to her launching Artsy Albums.
I asked Traci a few questions so you, and I, could get to know her a bit better. After all, don’t we all love to do business with people we like? I know I do!
What are a few things that set your kit club apart from all the others?
When I created my company I wanted it to be different, so not only is Artsy Albums a “no commitment” club, but I also offer new kits all the time, not just one per month. This way, papercrafters get more choices, more often. Artsy Albums kits are also pre-cut and packaged by page, so they are easy to assemble and great for taking to crops or retreats! (I’ll add that Traci uses the latest and greatest products our industry has on offer – no has-been, didn’t sell products here!)
How long have you been scrapbooking and what was the motivation to start your own kit club?
I’ve been a scrapbooker ever since I lost my mom to breast cancer as a teenager. It started as a way to document memories of her and my family, but quickly turned into a passion. After designing kits for a major scrapbook retailer for many years, I decided to take a leap of faith and start my own company. Encouraging others to preserve their photos and share their stories is what Artsy Albums is all about.
What are your favorite things to scrap?
Definitely the everyday moments with family and friends…and the sample albums for my kits, of course!
What’s your favorite scrapping treat (what do you like to nosh on while you create pages)?
Chips and guacamole! I only just tried guacamole for the first time a year ago (eating something that color green never appealed to me), but oh my goodness! Now I’m hooked
What kind of entertainment (TV, music, movies, conversation) do you enjoy while scrapbooking, or do you prefer quiet?
When I scrap with my girlfriends, we turn up the music and sing along to old 80’s favorites (much to the horror of my boys)…but when I’m alone, I’m a sucker for scrapping with a good, romantic comedy.
What ONE scrapbooking tool can you NOT live without?
If a camera is considered a scrapbooking tool, then it wins every time…but, I also love my large Accucut Grande Mark machine for cutting out chipboard albums, and my Silhouette Cameo for cutting paper.
What ONE scrapbooking tool do you own, but never use (or forget you have!)?
I have lots of embossing folders that never seem to make it to the project…maybe I would think of them often if I did more cards, but I do love the look when others use them.
What is your favorite memory?
I have so many, but my favorite recent memory is hiking down a mountain with my family to see an incredible waterfall in Hawaii. The hike down and back was a challenge, but watching my two sons, and their cousins, experience something that beautiful for the first time was truly something I will never forget.
O.K., I’m ready to join Traci and her friends for a weekend of papercrafting
while singing 80s songs and eating chips and guacamole!
