Papercrafting Journeys: Friday Field Trip – Memory Bound of Ankeny, IA
I hope you’re all enjoying the cooler Fall weather!
And, for those of you located in areas that actually have four distinct seasons, the wonderful displays of Fall color!
This is my favorite time to get out and shoot (with a camera) and I so wish we had more Fall color here in the Austin area.
Today we’re starting something new!
Today is the start of Field Trip Fridays, shares from the road.
I’m fortunate to travel quite a bit and when those travels take me to places where I can check out local papercrafting retailers, events, and/or retreat spots, I do my best to stop in and check them out.
Now, I’ll be sharing those stops, and more, with you!
What do I mean by the “and more?”
An occasional antique faire, vintage fest, junk shop tour, art exhibit, craft industry event and even more!
And, if you share stores, events and retreat options in your area – those you love and think are worthy of a stop – I’ll do my best to add them to my itinerary when I visit your neck of the woods.
To spotlight the independent stores, the fun papercrafting events many of you enjoy attending, and the retreat owners who do their best to make sure you papercrafters have a fun and relaxing, well, retreat!
So, now you can not only find stores, events and retreats in our FREE directories, but you’ll have a chance to see some of them up close and personal, and meet the folks behind the scenes.
And, hopefully, the “and more” will inspire you to look in new and unexpected places for papercrafting inspiration.
Well then, let’s get started!
One of the many benefits of being married to a wonderful man from Iowa is that we visit (equally wonderful) family there a few times a year.
And, on one of our recent trips, I made a quick journey to Memory Bound (MB), a store I’d visited in the past and in which I’d spent time working on a present for an IA family member (I’ll admit it, I was behind on getting the present finished and it was crunch time!)
I recalled the store being inviting and filled with everything I needed to finish my project – and then some!
And, I most certainly dropped a few dollars there before finishing up my project and heading out the door. (I know, you’re shocked, right?)
But, I hadn’t had the opportunity to meet the lovely owners, Kellie and Dawn.
This time, I did!
I met with Dawn and Kellie shortly after the store opened for the day and we enjoyed a wonderful conversation about how they started Memory Bound, how they define their store and what makes it different from other stores papercrafters might have visited.
Dawn and Kellie started out as friends (don’t worry – they still are!) who 13 years ago decided to start some kind of fun business together.
It began with a machine that imprinted scrapbook album covers and they worked out of their home. Next they hosted a scrapbooking event, hoping to get 50 people to attend. There were 500 attendees!
They then purchased an online store called Scrapper’s Haven and hosted another event, this time bringing in 1000 scrappers!
Less than a year after they began imprinting albums, Memory Bound the store opened!
And, it’s been going strong ever since, even through the tough recession years.
Dawn and Kellie say the secret to their success has been its staff and its extensive selection of the latest & greatest papercrafting products. Customers have told them that MB has the largest selection of scrapbooking products they have ever seen. “We want customers to come to Memory Bound for an ‘experience’ and think of it as their happy place,” Kellie told me.
They have adjusted to the times, adding cardmaking, home decor, mixed media and other trending crafts to the offering.
From what I could see during my visit, this strategy works!
After our fun conversation, I made my way around the store, camera in-hand and eyes wide open for fun new papercrafting goodies I could share with all of you.
O.K. I’ll admit it, I might have also been looking for a few goodies to take home with me!
All I can say is that it’s a good thing I had a large memory card in my camera and only one credit card in my wallet!
The selection is impressive – and eclectic – and I managed to find unique products for documenting my daughter’s upcoming wedding, a recent train trip to Chicago, our almost-annual trip to the Iowa State Fair (which, according to my husband, is THE state fair!) and the family’s loyalty to the University of Iowa Hawkeyes! (Memory Bound does carry products for many other teams as well.)
After chatting and laughing with the staff as they rang up all of my items (it took a while! ;)), I reluctantly headed out the door, looking forward to my next family visit to Iowa and another chance to stop in at Memory Bound.
So, are you ready to see a bit of this wonderful store?
Come on in…
Memory Bound is located on Ankeny Boulevard, 641 North Ankeny Blvd. to be exact. If we get to meet in person, be sure to ask me how the Hertz Neverlost System pronounces it!
Just to the right of the front door when I visited was a table filled with wedding decor ideas that stopped me dead in my tracks – wonderful!
I picked up a few great ideas for my daughter’s upcoming wedding and grabbed a few items to test out.
Then, as you look to the right, this is what you see – nearly endless papercrafting goodies!
And, this view only covers about one-third of the store!
Now, if altered art/mixed media is your thing, they’ve got you covered as well!
There was no shortage of canvases, boxes, metal embellishments, frames, paints, inks, glitters (including the new Tim Holtz Distress Glitters!), embossing powders, etc.
Remember THE fair I mentioned above?
Memory Bound has a wonderful selection of county- and country-fair-themed ephemera, embellishments and papers for all your papercrafting needs, even if the fair you attend is not THE fair! 😉
The class selection includes something for everybody, from cardmaking to scrapbooking to mixed media projects.
If you want to learn to create it, it’s likely you’ll find a class to take!
And, if you’re into auto racing (or you’re married to someone who is), you’ll find plenty to document that passion and its associated activities.
Next, I wandered to the back of the store, to the area where they stock lots of sports and team die cuts, many of which are unique to Memory Bound.
If you’re a sports enthusiast, then you HAVE to check out their selection of fun sports team-branded papercrafting supplies.
Then, as I made my way back toward the center of the store, I came across this robust collection of birthday supplies.
And, a fun display of Disney-themed party decor and layout supplies.
Did you note the tutu? Cute!
Next up: Project Life!
Yup, Memory Bound is making sure that those of us who’ve been bitten by the Project Life documenting bug are well supplied.
And no, the photo above does not represent their whole collection – there’s plenty more to choose from!
Then, making my way across to the other side of the store I hit the stencil and stamp set motherload!
Memory Bound also has lots of options for storing all the wonderful items we all have in our stashes!
And of course, no tour would be complete without a peek into the crop room, right?
The crop room (also classroom) at Memory Bound is roomy and supplied with a plethora of tools for customers to use (I took advantage of this when I worked on that last-minute project the first time I was in the store).
And finally, two of their friendly staff members (holding my very full shopping bag!).
Whew, that was quite the tour, no?
I do hope that if you’re an IA local you’ll stop in whenever you get the chance and show this wonderful store some love…and tell ’em we sent ya!
Right now, they are YOUR Christmas holiday papercrafting headquarters!
And, if you’re not a local but you’ll be visiting the Ankeny area, or will be passing by on a future road trip, it’s worth your while to stop in and stock up on the latest and greatest products.
Trust me – I have been to a lot of stores around the country and this is one of the best stocked stores, and one that offers wonderful customer service.
And now for a bonus…
For those of you who might have seen the WRMK Punch Board videos we shared and the giveaways for these wonderful new tools we hosted on our blog and on Facebook, we have some great news!
Nope, there are no more being given away, but Memory Bound has the fabulous Punch Boards on sale for just $14.99!
But you better hurry, they’re only on sale until November 11th.
That’s an awesome deal and I’d be buying more to give as gifts if I lived close by!
If you enjoyed the profile on Memory Bound, and would like to let them know you read about them and liked what you saw and heard, please visit the Memory Bound Scrapbook Store Facebook page and LIKE them! (Oh, and tell ’em we sent ya!)
O.K. kids, that about wraps it up for this first edition of Field Trip Fridays.
