Papercrafting Product Review: The Hobby Holster
We’re Putting Papercrafting Products Through Their Paces, Just For YOU!

Hello Papercrafters!

We’re happy to share yet another unbiased papercrafting product review with you today.

Our goal?

To provide you with valuable information to help you decide whether or not this product is worth your hard-earned papercrafting dollars.

What’s involved in a papercrafting product review?

We put papercrafting products through their paces and share our experiences with you.

What can you expect from our papercrafting product reviews?

We’re focused on providing you with totally unbiased papercrafting product reviews, including how the products perform “in real life,” and what we think of the value (cost vs. functionality).

And when we say totally unbiased papercrafting product reviews, we mean it!

If we really love a papercrafting tool or product, we’ll say so.

Conversely, if we find shortcomings, we’ll call attention to those as well.

The manufacturers who submit their papercrafting products to us have been told about our commitment to creating unbiased papercrafting product reviews and they have agreed to our policy prior to sending us their product(s).

And, in case anyone’s interested, we do not accept payment in conjunction with any of the papercrafting product reviews we conduct and share.

Finally, we give away or donate many of the papercrafting products and tools we review when the reviews are complete – we accept papercrafting products for review solely to enable us to try out the product and share a totally honest review with you, our valued community members.

Of the papercrafting products we do keep, all are kept so they can be used to create projects to share with you in the future, and/or in the case of a machine like the Brother Scan’NCut (which we reviewed in 2013), to enable us to further explore the product and share our results.

Our papercrafting product reviews will always include photos and/or videos, as well as spoken and/or written lists of product specs, features and benefits, pros and cons, pricing information, links to the manufacturers’ website and social media channels, and/or places where the product can be purchased. And, we do our best to find other, unique ways to use the products and share our ideas (and tips and tricks!) with you.

Additionally, when appropriate, we’ll share projects we’ve created with the product or tool and/or link you to one or more created by others.

Hopefully you enjoy watching and/or reading the papercrafting product reviews as much as we enjoy producing them!

Papercrafting Product Review: The Hobby Holster

I first learned about The Hobby Holster® at the Craft & Hobby Association‘s (CHA‘s) Mega Show last January.

I love visiting with the creators of new products entering the craft and hobby market and Holster Brands (the maker of The Hobby Holster®) was on my “hit list.”

After a brief intro to the product by the creators, I was intrigued enough to want to get my hands on one to review, and thus, here we are!

Since dealing with heat tools while creating can be both hazardous and a pain (literally and figuratively!), The Hobby Holster® seemed liked a solution that might serve me – and you! – quite well.

Let’s find out…

This is the description the manufacturer provided:
“The Hobby Holster® is a heat-resistant, 100% silicone pocket that is designed to hold hot crafting tools. A divided pocket separates a glue gun from hot glue sticks, glitter pens from scrapbook paper, Mod Podge® from felt, and endless other odd couples and crafty pairings.  The silicone material allows The Hobby Holster® to cling to any smooth surface without the use of suction cups or adhesive, and it’s easy to place and easy to move when your crafting day is complete.”

Papercrafting Product Review: The Hobby Holster Used to Hold A Glue Gun

Even before we received The Hobby Holster® for review, I immediately started thinking about other ways I (and you!) might be able to put The Hobby Holster® to use.

  • To hold small papercrafting tools, or pens and markers, (out of the way, but at-hand) when working on a small work surface (TV tray or airplane tray table?)
  • To protect my work surface from the heat of my small craft iron
  • To hold my heat gun when it’s intermittently in use
  • To hold paintbrushes (and rinsing water?)
  • To hold my phone or camera (so they’re easy to find when my creative “mess” takes over my work surface!)
  • To hold my crochet hooks, scissors and counting rings when I’m crocheting

And,

  • To hold toothbrushes and toothpaste, or cosmetic brushes, in the bathrooms
  • To hold dish brushes or sponges in the kitchen sink
  • To hold toiletries while traveling (hanging them from plane, train and hotel bathrooms?)
  • To hold craft tools and supplies while crafting on the road

I’m sure you’ll come up with even more ideas once you’ve seen The Hobby Holster® in action.

Are you ready for the review?

Here we go…

So, what do you think so far?

The Hobby Holster® is certainly a handy addition to a craft space…and many other areas of one’s home, or office, car or travel bag!

Here are some shots of The Hobby Holster® in action
around the house, in an office or classroom, and while traveling:

Following are some important points from the Holster Brands‘ website, followed by product specs, pros and cons discovered during my testing and the taping of the video, tips, tricks and usage ideas, pricing information, my manufacturer feedback, and our overall rating after completing our review.

Important Points:

  • The Hobby Holster® can be used on any smooth, non-porous surface (including tile, porcelain, stainless steel, granite, marble, metal, smooth laminate, glass, wood and plastic) that is clean and dry.
  • The “stickiness” is a permanent feature of the product and can be refreshed simply by cleaning The Hobby Holster® with alcohol or water.
  • Press on the flap to ensure The Hobby Holster® is firmly attached and test by pulling downward before adding products to its pockets. (Lift up on the flap to easily remove The Hobby Holster®.
  • Holster Brands claims The Hobby Holster® has been tested for heat resistance to 400º F – they do not recommend it be used to hold items that may be hotter.
  • Holster Brands states that you can leave a hot glue gun on while it’s resting in The Hobby Holster®, but you should always follow the heat tool manufacturer’s instructions; they also remind you to never leave any heat tool unattended. Additionally, we remind you to keep heat tools out of reach of small children!
  • Because The Hobby Holster® has two separate pockets, you can place two glue guns in it, one in each pocket. Holster Brands recommends only one heat tool be placed in each pocket at a time so the tools don’t damage each other.
  • Hot glue which might drip in or on The Hobby Holster® can be easily removed/peeled off once the glue is cool.

For confirmation of all of the above, and to review other frequently asked questions, please visit the Holster Brands website FAQ page.

Product Specs:

Papercrafting Product Review: Hobby Holster Measurements & Features (image)

Papercrafting Product Review: The Hobby Holster Measurements & Features

  • Lightweight
  • Overall Measurements: 10.5″ x 5.5″ (see The Hobby Holster product pages for all measurements)
  • Materials: Heat-resistant (to 400º F), 100% silicone pocket
  • Features: Two pockets, one shorter, one taller (there’s a slot in the outside of the taller pocket so a glue gun rests easily inside); built-in, double ruler on the flap section (one side has inches, one side has centimeters)
  • Made in China

The Hobby Holster® – Pros:

  • It’s lighweight and portable, and packs down quite small when you need to take it with you to crops, craft events or while traveling
  • Includes a built-in ruler (actually two – one side includes inches and one side includes centimeters)
  • It can be easily cleaned and used again and again, for a variety of purposes
  • It keeps small tools corralled and off your work surface
  • It keeps heat tools, such as glue guns (along with their glue sticks), off your work surface and out of the way
  • It makes using a glue gun much easier – you can simply swipe off excess glue on the flap of The Hobby Holster® and drop your glue gun into its “holster” to keep additional melting glue off your work surface
  • It’s currently available in four colors: grey, green, pink and turquoise
  • And, it’s great for storing so much more than craft supplies: toiletries, eyeglasses, small mobile phones, kitchen sponges and brushes, etc. (note: Holster Brands makes products specifically for the kitchen, and several other products for your home, office or car). Note: My iPhone 6 fit into the larger pocket, but not into the smaller pocket.

The Hobby Holster® - Possible Cons:

  • I really can’t think of any cons, although it would be great if it could be used for more heat tools, such as the Heat-It tool and all small craft irons. Since the former was not its intended purpose, we’ll share that suggested purpose with the manufacturer in our feedback below.

Tips, Tricks & Usage Information:

  • The Hobby Holster® is perfect for holding small papercrafting or needle-art tools (scissors, hooks, needles, etc.), or pens, pencils and markers, while you’re creating. It’s especially handy when working on a small work surface as the pocket and items hang off the edge of your work surface, leaving your work surface area free for your project (scrapbooks, cards, canvases, drawing or watercolor pads, etc.).
  • I’ve now gotten used to using The Hobby Holster® while traveling – The Hobby Holster® is now on my pack-list for traveling by car, plane or train, and for when I attend crafting events where space is at a premium.
  • I’m using The Hobby Holster® to keep my portable electric toothbrush and toothpaste hanging from the bathroom mirror in the train and hotel bathrooms I use. It holds the weight well and the items are more visible, meaning I’m less likely to leave them behind when I get off the train or check out of my hotel! I’m thinking I will need to buy a two more – one for crafting, one for toiletries and one to hold my phone!
  • I tried resting my small craft iron*, plate side down, on the flap of The Hobby Holster® to determine whether or not it was a viable option for keeping the hot iron on my work surface while crafting. My small craft iron appeared to get too hot for The Hobby Holster®, causing the surface of the flap on The Hobby Holster® to buckle, but the buckling did disappear once The Hobby Holster® cooled down. Because I couldn’t verify the temperature of my small craft iron, and because I’m not sure the flap was intended as a resting surface for a craft iron such as mine, I can’t recommend using the flap of The Hobby Holster® for this particular iron.
  • I was able to hang my small Heat-It heat gun* in the larger pocket of The Hobby Holster®, but it was a snug fit due to the circumference of my heat gun. A more narrow heat gun may fit better, but remember to follow the manufacturer’s instructions regarding usage of the tool you own (and do not leave the heat gun on if you place it inside The Hobby Holster®!).
  • I also tested The Hobby Holster® in the kitchen – it easily holds kitchen sponges and brushes out of the way, while keeping them close at hand. And, The Hobby Holster® can get wet without the “stickiness” failing. Keep in mind that Holster Brands does make other Holster Brands products which are specifically meant for the kitchen.
  • To clean The Hobby Holster® (after it got  covered in paper dust while sitting on my work surface while I was cutting up lots of cardstock), I simply placed the backside under running water and dried it by patting it with a microfiber towel (I recommend using a towel that doesn’t deposit lint, or let The Hobby Holster® air dry). The “stickiness” was good as new!
  • To take the The Hobby Holster® with you to crops and other crafting events, or while traveling, simply fold the top flap over the pocket section – it takes up very little space.

Pricing:
The Hobby Holster® retails for $ 19.99 USD. (Stay tuned for a special PCC offer below!)

Feedback for the Manufacturer:
My only feedback for the manufacturer is as follows:

  • It would be great if The Hobby Holster® could be used for more heat tools, such as the Heat-It tool and small craft irons such as the one I tested on the flap. Accommodating the Heat-It tool would require the larger pocket to be a bit wider and/or deeper, and a higher heat rating would be required to make the flap section of the product compatible with small craft irons such as the one I tested.
  • I’d love to see a larger, multi-pocket product made available – it would be great to have one that could hold a variety of tools simultaneously – 12″ across, with 3-4 pockets or varying depths would be ideal!

Overall Product Rating for The Hobby Holster®?

This Papercrafting Product Receives: 10 out of 10 Stars (image)

This Papercrafting Product Receives: 10 out of 10 Stars

The Hobby Holster® received 10 out of 10 stars!

(Note: I had considered giving The Hobby Holster® 9 out of 10 stars
given that laying my craft iron on the flap caused the flap to buckle a bit,
but since I was not able to confirm the temperature of my craft iron
and the product is only rated to withstand temps up to 400ºF,
and the product performed just fine once the flap cooled down,
I didn’t think that was fair.)

Papercrafting Company Intro: ScrapRoom

Papercrafting Company Intro: ScrapRoom
We’re Again Introducing YOU To A NEW Papercrafting Company!

Hello Papercrafters!

After receiving tremendously positive feedback on our previous papercrafting company intros, we’re happy to again introduce you to a new offering in the papercrafting industry.

Our goal?

To provide you with an introduction to the company, its founders and/or team, and its offering, and to show you how their offering can enhance your papercrafting endeavors (i.e., make your creative time more productive and FUN!).

And now, let’s check out ScrapRoom!

Papercrafting with ScrapRoom - Your Life. Your Design. (image)

Papercrafting with ScrapRoom – your life. your design.

I first learned about ScrapRoom when I was doing research on solutions for managing my ever-growing collection of photos and the occasional printable I download (a.k.a. digital elements, like those created and sold by designers such as Ali Edwards and those now available from Becky Higgins for Project Life™).

Background

As a branding, marketing and events professional in the high tech industry (specifically Silicon Valley) for many, many years before taking over PaperCrafter’s Corner, I used my fair share of graphics software packages.

But, that doesn’t mean I am all that enamored with technology or a tech guru – far from it!

Most of the time I learned just what I needed to learn to use each software package in order to do my job.

Fast forward to now…

I have very little time to learn new software packages and I want tools that are intuitive – easy to use.

I don’t want a bunch of cumbersome and unnecessary features and I don’t want to re-learn where things are every time the software is updated!

Who’s with me on this?!

Now, I’m aware of and have used (albeit marginally), several of the most popular options available for organizing and editing photos and digital elements, most of which promise that they are easy-to-use and make quick work of managing our digital assets (yeah, those hard-to-shake tech phrases are still in me!).

But, even as a former tech professional, I find myself overwhelmed with managing the thousands of photos I take a year.

Editing and printing in these tools are still major chores for me, which results in the majority of my photos never seeing the light of day (i.e., being added to the pages of a scrapbook or mini album or even a picture frame!).

Perhaps you can relate?

And, although creating layouts and other projects within a software package has never been a priority for me (o.k., I’ll admit that I have resisted it with all my being because it involved a computer and felt too much like work!), being able to do so would come in handy when I am traveling a lot.

The search for the best solution…

So, I’ve been looking for an easy-to-use, reasonably-priced solution that would enable me to just handle the tasks that are MOST important to me: quickly and easily upload, backup, edit, find and print my photos; and, organize, find, and use the digital elements I own and want to buy.

Oh, and offer a simple way to create layouts, if I decide to do so down the road.

Note that “find” showed up twice in my list of needs – finding what we own and have create is important!

I’ll bet you agree.

Well, finding such a solution seemed to be easier said than done…

…until now!

Papercrafting with ScrapRoom - Save Time! (image)

Papercrafting with ScrapRoom – Click This Image to See How YOU Can Save Time!

The day I found out about ScrapRoom was like eating cotton candy for the first time – sweet and exciting!

Of course I had to find out more so I sent an email to the company. I hoped to hear that my simple software wishes had been granted.

I received an almost immediate response from Blayne*, the mastermind behind the concept of ScrapRoom, and soon we were chatting non-stop about its capabilities and why and how she had it built.

I was simply blown away by the amount of thought Blayne had put into what the product does and how easy it is to use.

Could it be that I’d finally found the holy grail of photo and digital elements management tools?

Well, you’ll soon see!

The Creation of ScrapRoom

As someone who worked in the studio photography business, Blayne knows first-hand what a nightmare it can be to manage thousands of images and data files. As someone who has dabbled in digi scrapping, she knows how quickly one can become overwhelmed with digital elements and the ins and outs of creating pages digitally. And, as a long-time “traditional” scrapper, she knows how many photos we need to manage and how intimidating it can be for a paper scrapper to create digitally.

Her background, and personal and professional experience, most definitely played a significant role in the creation of ScrapRoom.

Speaking with many, many scrapbookers about their organizing, editing and creating challenges, and learning what they wanted and needed, was the icing on the cake and enhanced her ability to deliver a first-class product for scrapbookers.

As I mentioned in a recent tweet after watching one of Blayne’s latest videos, “I’m telling you lady, you have thought of everything! I can’t wait to share your tool with our papercrafters later this week!”

The key to ScrapRoom is that Blayne thought of everything papercrafters like us need and care about, she added in some really cool bells and whistles, and, most importantly, she (and her team) made it super easy to navigate and use.

And, she has created a tool that makes digi scrapping quick, easy and fun…if you choose to try it.

And that’s perhaps the best part – digi scrapping is just one (easy and awesome!) element of ScrapRoom!

Whether or not you ever try your hand at digi scrapping, I believe you’ll find ScrapRoom to be worthy of your hard-earned papercrafting dollars.

Speaking of which, Blayne has generously offered our community an amazing price on ScrapRoom!

*Full Disclosure:
During our first in-person meeting, at CHA’s Summer Show in Las Vegas in 2013, Blayne and I chatted non-stop, like old friends who were just picking up where they’d left off since their last conversation. The thing is, we had never met before that day! Since that time we’ve become good long-distance friends (she’s in Atlanta and I’m in Austin) and we’ve had many a 2-3 hour conversation! I’m sure you’ll feel that way too if and when you meet her. :)

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored Expressions - Up Up & Away Cutting Plate

If “make party invitations” is on your to-do list, then the Up, Up & Away Cutting Plate should be on your shopping list.

How quick and easy would it be to cut this design out, apply it to card fronts and add “You’re Invited?”

Quick invites for sure!

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored Expressions - Double the Fun Girl Sequins (image)

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored ExpressionsDouble the Fun Girl Sequins

If bling’s your thing, then these Double the Fun Girl Sequins likely have you giddy!

And there’s a Double the Fun Boy Sequins version as well!

I’d love to have a whole line of colorful bottles like this one staring back at me from my shelves – how about you?

Heck, I might even use them! ;)

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored Expressions - Matched Kit Double the Fun Papers (image)

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored ExpressionsMatched Kit Double the Fun Papers

And finally, there’s a festive collection of patterned papers and matching cardstock – the Matched Kit Double the Fun Papers.

Who doesn’t love 6×6 paper pads?

Wow, who’s ready to celebrate a birthday?

We are, we are!

And the collection of stamps, dies, sequins and papers above will do the trick whether you’re making cards, layouts or party decorations.

Now don’t forget to check out the rest of the birthday-themed products (yes, there are more!).

And now, it’s time to celebrate Halloween!

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored Expressions - Little Bits Halloween Stamp Set (image)

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored ExpressionsLittle Bits Halloween Stamp Set

I love the collection of words in the Little Bits of Halloween stamp set.

Can’t you see creating a “subway art” block of text with these and placing it on a scrapbook layout?

Or, using some of the adjectives to describe your little ghosts and goblins dressed in their Halloween costumes?

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored Expressions - Little Bits Halloween Scene Stamp Set (image)

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored Expressions - Little Bits – Halloween Scene Dies

These Little Bits – Halloween Scene dies are just the thing for creating lots of little page or card accents.

And, they’re small enough to be used on that collection of scraps we all have - time to crash your stash!

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored Expressions - Halloween Treat Toppers Dies (image)

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored ExpressionsHalloween Treat Toppers Dies

The Halloween Treat Toppers dies are just the thing for making cupcake toppers – just add a toothpick to the back and voila!

But don’t stop there – slip a piece of baker’s twine through the opening in the die cut and you have quick and easy treat-bag tags!

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored Expressions - Sack It Pumpkin Dies (image)

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored Expressions - Sack It Pumpkin Dies

If pumpkins are your thing then the Sack It Pumpkin die set is a must-have!

Just like the other Taylored Expressions Sack It dies, this die set is designed to make it easy to create sacks, sacks for treats!

Be sure to check out the sample projects for this fun die set!

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored Expressions - Spooky Trees Cutting Plate (image)

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored ExpressionsSpooky Trees Cutting Plate

I know the Spooky Trees Cutting Plate is meant for creating trees for Halloween projects, but I think it’d be perfect for so much more!

I can see cutting out the trees and adding multi-colored Fall leaves to their branches, or cutting the trees from dark red paper and adding punched pink hearts for Valentine’s Day projects.

Or, creating “stained glass” by cutting this out of acetate and adding alcohol inks to the sections.

What do you think?

Perhaps you have even more ideas for using this cutting plate?

I bet you do!

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored Expressions - Tangled Web Embossing Folder (image)

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored Expressions - Tangled Web Embossing Folder

I have to have this Tangled Web Embossing Folder!

Besides the many possibilities for using it on Halloween pages and cards, I see it being used as a framework for Zentangles!

I can’t wait to get my hands on this and fill it with repeated shapes and patterns!

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored Expressions - Zig Zag Embossing Folder (image)

Papercrafting Product Release: Taylored ExpressionsZig Zag Embossing Folder

The Zig Zag Embossing Folder is actually a part of the birthday products release, but I think it’d be ideal for Halloween as well.

How about embossing pieces of orange cardstock and inking the raised zig-zags with black ink?

Or, embossing some of the Hocus Pocus papers below?

Lots of creative options for this new product!

More bling!

Again, if bling’s your thing, then Taylored Expressions has you covered!

These Hocus Pocus Sequins NEED to be added to your Halloween papercrafted projects!

The colors are perfectly suited to the papers below, but I see other uses as well.

The green sequins, when lined up appropriately, could become a lovely Christmas tree!

And again, we have a perfectly matched set of 6×6 papers and cardstock – the Matched Kit Hocus Pocus Papers.

How fun are the patterns?

I’m partial to the paper with the candy on it. :)

O.k., I’ll admit it, I have a definite sweet tooth and staying away from sweets at this time of year is hard!

If Halloween is a time for partying and fun in your house, then the newest Halloween-themed products we shared above (and the other new Halloween products on the Taylored Expressions site) are just the ticket – the stamps and dies, embossing folders, and sequins and papers are sure to make marking the occasion even more fun!

Papercrafting Product Release: Paper House Productions – United States Navy Collection

Paper House Productions has teamed up with the U.S. Military to create four new, licensed Military collections!

The authenticity, texture and overall feel means they are appropriate and not too cutesy (which some may not care for).

As the daughter of a Navy man, Monica likes the United States Navy collection the best!

And of course, I, the daughter of a retired Marine, love the United States Marine Corps collection.
