Paper crafting messageboards and blogs have been buzzing over a new product that burst onto the scene recently. It is called a software designed to use with your Cricut, and is called "Make-The-Cut." It is a direct competitor to SCAL (Sure Cuts A Lot.) (Neither MTC nor SCAL are supported by ProvoCraft, the manufacturer of Cricut.)
One popular blogger and unofficial Cricut authority went from just hearing about "Make-The-Cut" on December 21st to signing up to be an affiliate and fully endorsing the product within less than 10 days!! This blogger is not known for backing many products, so I was surprised to see such a quick and strong endorsement from her. I guess "Make-The-Cut" must be impressive!
As a Cricut owner who runs screaming away from her computer when it comes time to scrapbook, I do not own Design Studio or SCAL, so I am not equipped to provide firsthand knowledge about this product. What I can do is provide you some information to do your own research so you can (a) know what everyone is talking about and (b) consider the product for yourself.
Firstly, "Make-The-Cut" advertises itself by saying:
Imagine It. Create It. Cut It. It's That Simple. Make The Cut! allows you to easily cut virtually any shape you can imagine (including TrueType Fonts) using your Cricutâ„¢ machine without needing to purchase expensive cartridges. With its easy-to-learn interface, the possibilities are endless. Go unleash the true power of your Cricutâ„¢!
Here is the list of features listed on their site:
A thread on the Two Peas Messageboard was started on 12/21/09 telling about the product and as of today there have already been almost 2500 views of the message! Scrapbook Grandma's blog has several videos posted to show the product in action here. Just a Scrappin provides links to several videos and has written an article here contrasting & comparing MTC versus SCAL. (She favors MTC.) And finally, here is a link to a PDF of a spreadsheet you can download from Clever Someday (Geeky Ideas for Desktop Crafting) that lists the features of SCAL, MTC, Gypsy, Design Studio, etc all on one grid!
With the rapid & intense buzz surrounding the product, I assumed that "Make-The-Cut" must have been produced and backed by a large, well-established crafting company with industry ties and distribution channels. Nope! The below quote is from the "About Us" section of MTC's website:
We are a small family-owned and operated business operating out of the Midwest in the USA.
The Make The Cut! idea was started when my wife came to me and asked "I wish the Cricut could do…" So I sat down and started designing Make The Cut!, adding and tweeking ideas on what we thought would make the perfect solution to the Cricut. After a couple months of working around the clock, Make The Cut! was born! We hope you try the software and learn all the possible things you can do. We are very proud of Make The Cut! and would love to hear your feedback on how we can make it better.
And here is a picture they shared of the MTC home office:
Surprised? Yeah, me too! I'm glad to see that entrepreneurialism is alive & well in the US!
What do you think? Is this something you'll be adding to your wish list? If you embrace using your computer with your Cricut and have experience and/or knowledge to share on this topic, please share!
