Part 1 recap: For many different reasons, I struggle with my layouts and search continually for solutions to help me scrap better & faster. I decided to give sketches a try, and turned to Scrapbook Generation's Allison Davis sketchbooks for help.
I thought it would be fun if we worked together on a layout, using one of my new sketches as a guide. I grabbed some photos from Spring 2009 (yes, I am behind!) of my son at an area "touch a truck" event that he had attended with my husband. Since Daddy was the only photographer at the event, all of our photos are landscape 4×6. I had about 8 total scrapabble pix, so I went in search of a sketch that would help me scrap 6-8 landscape style 4×6 photos.
I chose the 2nd sketch in book 4, shown below: (Click to view larger in pop-up window.)
Isn't this great! Perfect! Should be a total breeze to put together a fab layout now! I can use 6 of my landscape style 4×6 photos, just trimming 5 of them down to 4×4. So, I confidently got started selecting my favorite 6 pix and which ones to trim down.
I'd already selected my patterned paper so I grabbed that and cut specifically to the instructions. I was glad to know what the dimensions were to be — I always have a sick fear in my gut before I slice down some pretty patterned paper, worrying that I'm cutting something that later I'll wish I hadn't.
Uh oh …. But then, as always, the second guessing began. When the directions say to cut the patterned paper to a certain size, did they KNOW that I would pick really loud & bright patterned paper? Maybe they meant for it to be a subtle pattern? What if the pattern I chose is too busy with all of the colors in my photos?
Will you help me decide if I should really use patterned paper for the middle background paper, or if with my busy pictures I should choose a solid cardstock for that piece instead?
Below are two different pictures of the first layer of my layout, using two different papers. Which do you think we should choose before we proceed to the next step???
Vote in our poll below as to which we should choose. Feel free to explain your choice in the comments below. We'll then proceed with the most popular choice, and then we'll vote on embellishments, etc from there 🙂
Can't wait to see which you choose! Come back soon for Part III to help us with the next steps in the layout….
